Law enforcement officers throughout Smith County, Texas have been busy the past four days making East Texas streets and neighborhoods safer by removing the 'bad players' from the mix.

There were a total of 98 individuals that were booked into the Smith County Jail last Friday through Monday. Of those arrests, 25 were felony arrests. Felony arrests were made for:

  • possession of a controlled substance
  • continuous violence against the family
  • driving while intoxicated - three times or more
  • injury to a child/elderly person
  • aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • assault of a family member impeding breath/circulation
  • felon in possession of a firearm

Those are just a few of the charges that some East Texans are facing. The majority of the felony arrests were for possession of a controlled substance.

All the information in this article was obtained through an open records request, and while looking up the felony arrests there was one individual that stood out because of their previous arrest record.

An individual has been arrested eight times for driving while intoxicated.

This is one of the biggest issues that East Texas faces, driving while intoxicated and this individual has been arrested eight times for the same potentially deadly reason. I do not have an issue with people having a good time, letting loose, and having a couple of drinks. But when it comes to drinking and driving, not only are they putting themselves in harm's way, but they could be doing the same for other innocent people just making a trip to the grocery store or soccer field.

PLEASE - if you're going to stop by during happy hour or have some drinks at a friend's place on the weekend DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE there could be deadly consequences for yourself and others on the road. This goes true for those who use drugs while driving.
