As part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is providing over $40 million to support Louisiana's public transportation in rural areas.

The news came in a press release from U.S. Representative Mike Johnson, who says the state's public transportation in rural areas has been heavily impacted by COVID-19.

“Public transportation fills a critical gap by giving individuals access to buses and other transit options, who may not have another way to get from one place to another,” said Congressman Johnson in the press release. “That is why I’m very pleased to see this strong grant being awarded to LADOTD to continue transit operations in rural parts of the state after being vastly impacted by COVID-19 due to stay-at-home orders."

Earlier today, Rep. Johnson announced FEMA was providing $6.5 million to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals to help in the fight against the coronavirus.

"I thank the Trump administration for recognizing transportation as a vital operation, and the FTA for this award to maintain Louisiana’s public transportation system.”
