Louisiana’s Population Has Grown by 107k Since 2010 According to New Census
According to preliminary data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Louisiana's population has increased by more than 107,000 residents between 2010 and 2020.
You may recall last year being asked to answer a few questions for the new census. This is done by the U.S. Census Bureau, the federal agency tasked with providing quality data about the country's people and economy.
As of April 1, 2020, the Census Bureau's stats show that 4,661,468 people lived in Louisiana.
In 2010, the Census tallied 4,553,962 people in the state. That marks a population increase of 2.3%.
Unfortunately, that increase was not enough for Louisiana to gain an extra congressional seat.
The following states all added residents and gained at least one congressional seat: Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina, Oregon, and Texas.
Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia all lost at least one congressional seat. California also lost a congressional seat for the first time in its 170 year history.
Overall, the population of the United States rose from 309,183,463 in 2010 to 331,108,434 in 2020. That's an increase of nearly 22 million people.
As you can see in the map above, only three states (and Puerto Rico) experienced a decrease in population: Illinois, Mississippi and West Virginia.
