That Time Chris Farley Gave Shreveport a Hilarious SNL Showcase
Remember when Shreveport got a shout-out on Saturday Night Live with Chris Farley? If you haven't seen it, get ready to see Farley play a really convincing interpretation of a Shreveport resident after being aggravated while out to eat.
When SNL and Chris Farley Came to Shreveport
The Schiller Visions: Hidden Camera Commercials sketch was featured on a November 1991 edition of SNL and has been immortalized on several 'Best Of' compilations. The sketch parodies a documentary looking to blow the lid open on the "hidden camera commercial" trend.
Chris Farley's character is enjoying a meal when the hidden camera crew tell him he's not actually drinking real coffee but decaf instant coffee, which causes Farley's character to fly into a blind rage threatening to kill whoever did this to him with "God as my witness!"
The connection to Shreveport isn't made until the sketch cuts to the narrator in studio who will be interviewing the victim "live from Shreveport, Louisiana via international satellite..."
Was Monjuini's the Real Location for Chris Farley?
If this sketch takes place in Shreveport we have reason to believe we know exactly where it took place. In the sketch the resturant appears to be a smalller intimate venue, with tea, pies, and what looks like pasta. If you're familiar with Shreveport's local resturants that description probably sounds exactly like Monjuini's Italian Cafe.
Did Chris Farley really travel all the way to Shreveport just to trash a beloved local resturant? Not likely, but it's nice to have a momeny of comedy history with a legend of the business tied to our town's name.
