October is Fire Prevention Month.  That's a great excuse to replace batteries in your smoke alarms, check that your extinguishers aren't out of date, and go over the fire safety plan with your family.  According to Pat Dyas, Chief of fire prevention for Shreveport Fire Department, the month long campaign for fire safety awareness started after the Great Chicago Fire.

The fire started on October 8th 1871 and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings.  It also brought massive technological advancement to the field of fire fighting and, most especially, the field of fire prevention.  That's why we have devices and procedures to keep us safe!

This year the theme is: Don't wait, check the date!  Grab a chair and make sure all your detectors are nice and loud!  Stay safe!
