The 1990s were a golden era for pop culture, shaping the modern movie landscape. Even Hollywood agrees, just think about how many times they've rebooted a beloved series from that time period. As we gear up for Geek'd Con X, it's the perfect time to revisit the films that laid the groundwork for this year's lineup. These 5 movies are more than just nostalgia trips, but pillars of modern geekdom.

Movie 1: Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks (1993)

Technically, this was a TV special, but it's the closest we'll get to a '90s anime movie for now. History of Trunks takes place in an alternate reality from the one in Dragon Ball Z, meaning it can be enjoyed even if you're not a diehard fan who knows everything about the lore.

The Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks features two guests who will be appearing at Geek'd Con X. Tiffany Vollmer (voice of Bulma) and Chuck Huber (voices of Android 17, Android 13, and more) both have voice acting credits for the English release.

Movie 2: The Sandlot (1993)

A classic movie that will live long past the 90s, even if it is as a catchphrase. A feel-good movie about young kids who love to play baseball on an adventure during their summer break in 1962.

The iconic line "You're killing me smalls!" was delivered by the iconic Great Hambino, whose actor, Patrick Renna, will be appearing in Shreveport for Geek'd Con X.

Movie 3: Mallrats (1995)

"Indie sleaze" is a term thrown around online to describe a unique genre and style, and if you told me it originated from Kevin Smith's feature-length film debut, I would believe you. Two young guys hang out at the mall after being dumped on the same day, with a stacked cast of unique and captivating characters.

Three of the stars from Mallrats, Jason Lee, Jeremy London, and Ethan Suplee, will be live in Shreveport for Geek'd Con's 10th anniversary.

Movie 4: Dogma (1999)

The oldest movie on the list is also one of the hardest to find, for now. Dogma features Jason Lee of Mallrats fame as a main villain in a story that was lauded as blasphemous by critics when it launched. In the years since the movie became a cult classic, but for years the movie rights have been owned by convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein, and nowhere on streaming.

Just recently, Kevin Smith bought back the rights to Dogma and rereleased the films to theatres for a limited time. It's still up in the air whether the movie will make it to streaming or not.

Movie 5: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

The movie that kicked it all off, depending on which TMNT superfan you talk to. It's not the greatest cinematic masterpiece of all time, but it's got just the right amount of cheese to make it an enjoyable watch with company. Grab some friends, some pizza, and some drinks, and the entire trilogy of 1990s TMNT movies can become a night to remember.

You can meet the stars of TMNT at this year's Geek'd, and not just the four turtles, Kenn Scott, Robbie Rist, Brian Tochi, and Ernie Reyes Jr., but also the villain Shredder, Francois Chau.
