According to CNN, a Bay Area Tesla police patrol car ran low on power while in pursuit last Friday. A spokesperson from the Fremont Police Department told the news site that "It happens from time to time, especially if an officer returns to the station to take a report and then they never go back out in the street."

The officer driving the Tesla was in pursuit of a suspect wanted in connection to a crime in a nearby town. Once the officer confirmed the license plate, an attempted traffic stop was made, and that's when the suspect led them on a pursuit. The officer then realized the car only had six miles of battery life left. There were other units following behind, but the chase was later called off due to the unsafe driving by the suspect. The suspect's car was later found abandoned in San Jose by the highway patrol.

Fremont Police have only been in the Tesla pilot program for six months, and citied there is no written policy regarding gas or charging, but that "the general guideline is that it should at least be half full at the beginning of the shift, which this car was".
