With the new year drawing near, fireworks stands are popping up everywhere in the Shreveport-Bossier City, LA area. Here are some guidelines on when and where you can shoot fireworks for a safe and festive celebration for all!

What rules do you have to follow when shooting off fireworks for New Year's Eve in the Shreveport-Bossier City area?

Rule number one is not to celebrate the new year by firing a gun in the air. It seems like a silly warning, but someone does it every year and it can seriously injure someone. After all, what goes up, must come down!

So, when and where can you shoot fireworks with your family? The answer depends entirely on where you live. Don't forget to keep a bucket or hose nearby in case of fire and please, don't let children shoot fireworks unsupervised.

Bossier City - Fireworks may be sold and set off within the city limits from December 23rd through January 1st between the hours of 10 am and 10 pm. The exception is on New Year's Eve when fireworks may be discharged until 12:30 am.

Bossier Parish - Bossier Parish doesn't have any specific fireworks ordinances, yet they do have an excessive noise ordinance you should be aware of that is in effect year-round from 10 pm to 7 am and we're pretty sure that fireworks fit that description.

Caddo Parish - The ordinances regarding fireworks in Caddo Parish proper mirror Shreveport's.

Shreveport - Fireworks, excluding bottle rockets and skyrockets, may be discharged in the city between 8 am and 10 pm each day except New Year’s Eve when they are allowed until 1 am Jan. 1.

The Bossier City Fire Department has tips to make sure everyone has an enjoyable holiday WITHOUT sustaining any injuries or starting any fires.

Fireworks Safety Tips from BCFD:

· Young children should never be given fireworks to handle alone. Responsible adult supervision is a must.
· Always purchase fireworks from an established and reputable retail outlet.
· Never shoot, aim, or throw fireworks at people or animals.
· Keep a bucket of water handy for emergencies (ideal for soaking hot sparklers).
· Never try to re-light fireworks that have failed to discharge. Douse all failed fireworks with water and wait 15 minutes before properly disposing.
· Be aware of dry conditions. Never ignite fireworks on or near areas of dry vegetation. Doing so could spark fires.
