Is Shreveport Now A Safe Place For Women?
A new study has analyzed data from 182 cities in the U.S. to find which cities are more likely to be considered safe. Where among those cities did Shreveport land?
What is "Best & Worst"
WalletHub's new study, Best & Worst Cities for Women, ranked all selected 182 cities form best to worst based on factors like the percentage of women in poverty, the unemployment rate for women, women's life expectancy at birth, rate of uninsured females, and other vital metrics like the rate of gendered crime.
Four of the five best cities for women are all in California, with Columbia, Maryland being the outlier. The east coast has many cities on the list but very few of them ranked highly compared to those west coast cities like Irvine, California.
Is Shreveport a city for women?
Placed fifth among the worst, Shreveport is not a one of those cities for women. Shreveport performed worst in the economic and social metrics, placing as the 3rd worst city for women's economic and social well-being. Shreveport performed sub-optimally at 13th place among the worst cities for women's healthcare and safety.
Other cities in Louisiana in the study include Baton Rouge and New Orleans, ranking at 17th and 12th worst cities for women.
Should women move away from Shreveport?
With this data in mind, it's understandable for one to worry about themselves as a woman living in Shreveport, but does that mean you should get out as fast as you can? Well that's a decision you have to make yourself, but Miriam Liss from the Univeristy of Mary Washington gives some advice, "where to live is a very personal decision, and the choice will vary for each woman based on a wide range of factors (e.g., job, family, affordability)."
