From F to Safe: Shreveport’s Plan to Overhaul Its Troubled Water System
Residents of Shreveport have lived in fear of their own drinking water for years, reports of contaminants in the tap water have been confirmed for years, and have only gotten worse.
With an F grade on the quality of Shreveport's water system, local officials have a plan to turn things around for the troubled water system.
Shreveport's Tap Water Deemed Drinkable Despite Contaminants and F Grade System
A national survey of water systems across the country found that Shreveport's water was drinkable, but it found plenty of contaminants that raised an eyebrow. A lot of the city has also experienced its tap water turning a yellow-brown color. The Louisiana Department of Health graded the Shreveport water system as an F several times.
While the tap water in Shreveport is still drinkable, the LDH gave the city's water a -10 score for meeting federal water quality standards and a -20 for infrastructure problems, anything from water towers to pipes.
Clean Water Shreveport: A Multi-Year Plan to Revitalize the City's Water System
Shreveport is underway in fixing the water system's problems with a massive overhaul to make sure an F grade doesn't happen again. The Clean Water Shreveport program is a multi-year long program with the goal of replacing and upgrading parts of city water system until it meets federal and state water regulations.
From new piping to better serve the community to upgraded filter plants, millions of dollars are already being put to work to turn Shreveport's tap water clear and clean again.
While the plan to fix Shreveport's water system will take time, it's a much-needed fix that would only get worse without the city's intervention.
