Shreveport’s Secret Game of Throne’s Connection
Game of Thrones will be remembered as one of the greatest shows in history. The fan base is giant, the awards are plentiful, and the scope of the show is unmatched. There will probably never be a show that invests as much in filming on-location as Game of Thrones has.
But the show is coming to a close. The epic's finale is coming in a few weeks, creating a whole new level of focus on the series. It's safe to say there is more attention being paid to the show now than at any other point in its journey.
But did you know that Shreveport has a connection to Game of Thrones?
Way back in 2009, a solid two years before Game of Thrones premiered on HBO, a pilot episode of the show was shot and shown to a private gathering. The show was so poorly received during the screening, that HBO demanded it be redone, and new cast members and writers brought in.
But not all of the recasting was done because HBO wanted it, some of the recasting may have been due to scheduling issues, some of the participants may have lost confidence in the project, or others left for still unknown reasons.
One of the characters in the original pilot that was replaced, is one of the most iconic roles in the entire series...Daenerys Targaryen.
During that original pilot, Daenerys was not played by current actress Emilia Clarke, but rather by actress Tamzin Merchant. When the pilot was being re-shot, Merchant dropped out of the show.
If you recognize the name Tamzin Merchant, you probably already know the Shreveport connection before we even reveal it. But in case you're unfamiliar with Tamzin, she was one of the stars for the show Salem.
The TV series Salem was show for three seasons in the Shreveport area, meaning Tamzin was spending massive amounts of time in Shreveport. So much so, that like most of the cast, Tamzin moved to the area while filming. Where, according to WDAF-TV, she developed a love for biscuits and gravy.
Living in Shreveport, and eating biscuits and gravy, isn't the end of Tamzin's Shreveport tale. In fact, Tazmin directed and wrote a 2019 Louisiana Film Prize movie, called American Pride. Which was actually her second Prize Fest effort. She entered a film called American Virgin, that she also directed and wrote, back in 2015. That 2015 movie, American Virgin, was also shot in the Shreveport and Bossier City area.
So this isn't a flimsy connection by any stretch. The original Daenerys Targaryen has a strong bond to Shreveport for multiple reasons...not just biscuits and gravy.
