UPS Layoffs Hit 20,000: Will Shreveport Workers Be Affected?
UPS just made a scary announcement that has many Shreveport residents concerned. UPS is laying off over 20,000 workers due to the decline in Amazon shipments, according to CBS News.
UPS made the decision to deliver fewer packages from Amazon, which is its biggest customer, so naturally, they will see a huge decline in packages needing to be delivered. However, we didn't know that the decline in Amazon deliveries would eliminate so many jobs. According to Fox Business, this move "makes UPS the first big American company to move forward with large-scale layoffs in the face of slowing trade due to the Trump administration's tariffs."
The delivery giant currently has around 490,000 employees, and laying off over 20,000 will eliminate about 4% of the workforce at UPS. Last year, UPS announced that it would be eliminating 12,000 positions. This brings the number up to 32,000 layoffs in under two years.
Will Shreveport Be Affected by the Layoffs Just Announced?
Unfortunately, it is too soon to tell. Not only will UPS be eliminating 20,000 positions, but they also plan to consolidate overall. According to CNN, UPS plans to close 73 storefronts by June of 2025. Brian Dykes, the chief financial officer of UPS said during an earnings call on Tuesday morning,"These actions will enable us to expand our U.S. Domestic operating margin and increase profitability,"
