Veterinarians Warning Pet Owners about Canine Flu
I am usually on top of my game when it comes to being prepared for any kind of illness coming my way. My medicine cabinet is a tiny CVS store. It is stocked with plenty of ibuprofen, allergy meds, and vitamins. There is no way any kind of sickness is getting past my immune system firewall. However, I never really thought about my dog catching something like the flu. I am very lucky that my dog hasn't gotten super sick, but apparently dogs can catch the flu just like people can.
According to KSLA, both the H3N8 and the H3N2 canine flu strains have been reported in Louisiana and Texas.
Get this- there are flu shots for dogs. I don't know why I thought that dogs couldn't get the flu. They have allergies and all sorts of issues just like we do. So it just makes sense that dogs could contract viruses and other illnesses. That is why having a regular check up with a veterinarian is a good thing. Thankfully my chocolate lab is feeling like a champ and doesn't look like he is about to come down with anything.
