If you’ve ever applied for a loan or credit card, you know that your credit score is more than just that three-digit number. It’s a representation of your financial habits and discipline. Plus it tends to speak volumes, especially about how well you manage your debts.

But what about our community as a whole? How does our town - our area - stack up, not only against the rest of the USA, but with the folks who really count, America's credit bureaus.

Well...not so good.

The personal-finance website WalletHub has analyzed the median credit scores of residents in more than 2,000 of the nation's cities and towns. After all the data is in and the metrics analyzed, we find that the median credit score for Shreveport is a mere 630. That number puts our hometown into WalletHub's "Fair" category and ranks in the 4th percentile relative to all other cities.

Think of it this way, if Shreveport were some guy or gal going in to buy a car, could we afford a brand new Lexus, or a refurbished Yugo? Well, luckily, neither. To continue with our automotive metaphor, let's look at it this way...we'd have no trouble getting a shiny, new Civic.

American Cities & Towns with the Highest Credit Scores:

1) The Villages, Florida

2) Sun City West, Arizona

3) Sun City Center, Florida

4) Green Valley, Arizona

5) Los Altos, California

American Cities & Towns with the Lowest Credit Scores:

1) Camden, New Jersey

2) East St. Louis, Illinois

3) Chester, Pennsylvania

4) Detroit, Michigan

5) Gary, Indiana
