Who Gets Money from the Caddo Commission?
The Caddo Commission is set to ok the budget for 2018.The Appropriations Committee has been going over a list of requests from social service agencies. The Commission’s share of Riverfront gaming money is about $950 thousand, but the panel is expected to approve spending $1,027,500 dollars on these agencies. This means commissioners will have to find an extra $67,500 in the budget. The politics surrounding this committee have a lot of folks talking. Commissioners Louis Johnson and Mike Middleton were booted off the committee by Chairman Steven Jackson.
60 area agencies will be getting a piece of the pie. The grant amounts are as low as $1,000 dollars to $80 thousand for the Caddo Council on Aging Meals on Wheels program and $85 thousand for the Food Bank of NW La.
In looking at the chart by District, Matthew Linn's District 4 is the big winner pulling in almost 29% of the proposed funding. Jerald Bowman's District 5 garnered almost 14% of the cash. funding. Bowman was the Committee chairman. Jackson’s district grabs close to 13% of the funding and Stormy Gage-Watts’ district had 12%. Middleton's District 8 gets none of the cash.
Commission President Jackson did reach out to KEEL to let us know several of the agencies funded in his district serve the entire city, but have downtown addresses. These include agencies like SRAC, the Strand, the Indy Bowl, SciPort and many others.
He also tells us the LSU Ag Center extension and Shreveport Green get general fund money and both of those agencies are in Middleton's district.
