The founder of Chick-fil-A, S. Truett Cathy, passed away early this morning at the age of 93.

In the wee hours of this morning, Chick-fil-A announced that their founder, S. Truett Cathy had passed away. He was 93 years old.

According to the company, he died at 1:35 a.m. surrounded by his family. Cathy had been in failing health for the past few weeks.

The Chick-fil-A founder is survived by his wife Jeannette McNeil Cathy, the two had been married for 65 years, their two sns and daughter, as well as 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Born in Eastonton, Georgia in 1921, Cathy spent his childhood in Atlanta. He started tiny diner in Hapeville, Georgia. Gaining fame for their boneless chicken sandwiches, Chick-fil-A was soon born. The company now has 1,800 restaurants across 40 states.

Cathy's son, Dan, now runs the company after his father stepped down last year. In light of that, Chick-fil-A plans to hold true to the Christian principles of Cathy, by remaining a privately held company and staying closed on Sundays, among other aspects.
