The animated family film "Despicable Me 2" held off some strong competition to hang on to the No. 1 spot in this weekend's box office with an estimated take of $44.7 million.

Another sequel, "Grown Ups 2", starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James and David Spade, debuted in second place with $42.5 million, and and "Pacific Rim" came in third with $38.3 million in its first week.
