The stars of “Heaven Is For Real” sat down for a frank discussion about faith, family and how audiences are being touched by the movie.

According to the official “Heaven Is For Real” website:

HEAVEN IS FOR REAL brings to the screen the true story of a small-town father who must find the courage and conviction to share his son’s extraordinary, life-changing experience with the world. The film stars Academy Award® nominee and Emmy® award winning actor Greg Kinnear as Todd Burpo and co-stars Kelly Reilly as Sonja Burpo, the real-life couple whose son Colton (newcomer Connor Corum) claims to have visited Heaven during a near death experience. Colton recounts the details of his amazing journey with childlike innocence and speaks matter-of-factly about things that happened before his birth … things he couldn’t possibly know. Todd and his family are then challenged to examine the meaning from this remarkable event.

For co-star Margo Martindale, the movie is something that will generate discussion, even among doubters.

“That’s what I think is the most wonderful thing about this, hopefully, that people who aren’t people of faith, people of faith, whoever read the book, that they’ll talk about it,” said Martindale. The actress added: “We’re all going to die.”

“Well, don’t bring the room down,” Kinnear joked in response.

The subject matter of the movie, however, deals directly with what happens after death. Is there really a heaven waiting on the other side? Director Randall Wallace believes the movie tackles those heavy themes in a way that’s beyond “dogmatic questions.”

“In a way, this movie isn’t about religion,” said director Randall Wallace. “It’s about something much greater than that. It’s about the mystery of who we are, and where we come from.”

Part of the challenge of relaying those deeper questions was finding the right actor to play young Colton (Connor Corum), who claims to have visited heaven in the story.

Despite some initial apprehension, Kinnear, who plays Colton’s father in the movie, revealed how he knew Connor was the right choice during one particular audition scene.

“Very effortlessly, [Connor] just started to speak and started to tell us who Colton was,” said Kinnear. “He just was very natural, very real and really embodied something special in his performance.”

The movie, based on the #1 New York Times bestseller, is in theaters April 16.
