Katy Perry has spawned another single, this time in the form of ‘Wide Awake,’ which was written expressly for her upcoming 3D film ‘Katy Perry: Part of Me’ and appears on the deluxe edition of ‘Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection.’ It’s an emotional and melancholy song, infused with synths, that we can’t help but think has been influenced by her split with Russell Brand.

Perry sings “I wish I knew then / What I know now / Wouldn’t dive in / Wouldn’t bow down / Gravity hurts / Made it so sweet / Till I woke up / On the concrete / Falling from cloud nine / Crashing from the high / I’m letting go tonight.” That’s telling, no?

The song has a slow to mid tempo, with Perry’s voice taking the lead. Her voice is surrounded by an acoustic guitar and some echoed harmonies, but having Perry take the lead keeps the song immediate.

Perry manages to empower the song without belting, thanks to the emotion with which she sings. It’d be impossible to think her split with Brand doesn’t factor into the lyrics and the mood of the song. While her songs always have inherent cuteness, this is a more introspective Katy Perry. The fluffy confections and novelty phrasings are pushed to the side… for now.

Newly single and recently de-coupled gals will find themselves relating to the lyrics in an instant and cranking it on their iPods. It’s Perry’s most personal song — and one of our favorites.

Check out her lyric video (below) for ‘Wide Awake,’ which creatively integrates the lyrics into her Facebook updates that span over the period when she was dropping all five of her No. 1 ‘Teenage Dream’ singles and garnering a slew of accolades. It’s even in Timeline. Cute, right?
