The highly anticipated big-screen adaptation of E.L. James' novel "50 Shades of Grey" practically owned the box office this weekend, opening strongly with an estimated $81.7 million.  It's the biggest opening ever for a film directed by a woman (Sam Taylor-Johnson).

Another high-profile debut- "Kingsman-The Secret Service" came in second with $35.6 million, while last week's No. 1, "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water" fell to third with $30.5 million.

"American Sniper" ($16.4 million) and "Jupiter Ascending" (9.4 million) round out the top five.
