Despite the recent discussions about Mardi Gras parades in Shreveport, LA, the Krewe of Centaur is set to reveal its incoming royalty for the upcoming Mardi Gras season this weekend.

Why do Mardi Gras krewes crown 'royals?

If you're new to Mardi Gras, you may be wondering what the deal is with crowning new royals. Each season, a new royal court is selected to represent the krewe at functions like the Krewe of Centaur Grand Bal and Parade as well as at charity functions, community outreach projects, and other area krewes' events. They're the official 'face' of the krewe. The royal court is revealed at a coronation event, which Centaur calls their 'Midway to Mardi Gras' party. Yes, we even celebrate during the time of year we're furthest away from the holiday!

What can you expect to see at a Mardi Gras coronation?

A lot of people wonder what to expect. First, attire is what they call 'Mardi Gras casual.' Wearing Mardi Gras-themed outfits is usually the norm with many Centaur members opting to wear their 'trash jacket,' which is generally an old tuxedo jacket that's been decorated with pins, trim, glitter, and sequins. While jeans are totally fine, Centaur asks that you not wear shorts. You will see some people in formal gowns and tuxedos, but they're generally the outgoing or incoming royalty. And yes, we definitely honor our 'Happy Has-Beens' for their service.

How do I get tickets to Centaur's Midway to Mardi Gras Coronation?

So here are the down-and-dirty details for Centaur's Midway to Mardi Gras Coronation this Saturday, August 12, 2023. The theme is 'Fly Away with Centaur' and no, you don't need to be a member to join in on the fun! You can get your ticket at the door for $85, however, you can pre-purchase tickets on the Krewe of Centaur website for $75. Doors open at 6 pm with the presentation aka royal tableau taking place at 8 pm at downtown Shreveport's Riverview Hall. The party rolls until 11 pm and will also feature an open bar, appetizers, and a fantastic silent auction. I'm so excited this party has returned to Riverview Hall. That's where I was crowned the Duchess of Food for Centaur for the 2015 Mardi Gras season (pictured above). So, without further ado, All Hail the Mighty Krewe of Centaur! I hope to see you Saturday!
