Krewe Of Centaur Puts Geek Culture Front And Center In Parades
If you've attended a few Krewe of Centaur Parades, or Float Loading parties, you might have noticed a trend. The Krewe of Centaur seems to always have geeky/nerdy float designs in their fleet. Seriously, it seems like there's always a float devoted to comic books, science fiction, or cartoons. Things that are traditionally thought of a "geeky".
Not that there's anything wrong with that...in fact, geeks pretty much run the world.
Think about the biggest movies in the box office every year, its either a comic book movie or a Star Wars movie. Biggest shows streaming or on TV? Comic book stories are all over it, from The Walking Dead franchise to The Boys. Or high fantasy shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings...those fall into geek culture as well.
But after thinking about it, you start to wonder why this trend exists. It might have something to do with the Krewe's origins.
If you look at the DNA of the Krewe of Centaur, it starts to feel like this is the way it should be. From the very first time floats rolled with Centaur logos on them...it has been a constant celebration of geek culture.
The evidence is baked into the origin story, dating back to a time when "geeky" wasn't exactly the mainstream cool it is today. While other Krewes were looking toward traditional French royalty or Greek mythology, the founders of Centaur were looking at the bridge of a starship...and they never really looked back.
The Sci-Fi Spark That Ignited a Legacy
The case for Centaur’s geek supremacy begins in year one, when the brand new organization joined the Krewe of Gemini’s parade. While Gemini's theme for that year's was centered on the 500th anniversary of Columbus, Centaur decided to pivot 180 degrees and look at the "Future 500." They didn't just build a float; they built the USS Enterprise and a vision of America in the year 2475.
This wasn't a subtle nod to a popular show, it was a specific move to bring science fiction to the streets of Shreveport. That original Star Trek influence set a precedent for every parade that followed...ensuring that the final frontier would always have a seat at the table in the Ark-La-Tex.
A Multiverse of Cinematic Influence
Over the years, it has been a snowball effect from parade to parade. Showing just one starship probably isn't enough to prove the point. The Trek legacy continued with updated, with modern parades being filled with geeky icons.
The sci-fi evidence only grows when you look at the consistent presence of the Star Wars franchise within the float lineup. Multiple floats throughout the years have featured a galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars is actually one of the franchises that has appeared multiple times in the parade. Sure, its been 3 decades, so it makes sense...not to mention everyone gets excited when they see Star Wars characters.
There has even been space for the occasional British invasion via a Doctor Who appearance...proving the krewe’s interests aren't limited to just one corner of the fandom.
You've even seen some more advanced, modern sci-fi breakthrough in the Krewe of Centaur parade. As The Matrix got a chance to roll down the parade route.
Animation and the Art of the Geek
The "geekiest krewe" title is further bolstered by Centaur’s deep dive into the world of animation and classic cartoons. It’s one thing to throw beads; it’s another to build a massive, vibrant tribute to the nautical nonsense of SpongeBob SquarePants...bringing Bikini Bottom to the Louisiana pavement.
The commitment to the medium extends to the classics, with intricate floats dedicated to Disney’s Peter Pan and the surreal landscape of Alice in Wonderland. These displays highlight a respect for the "nerdier" side of animation history, focusing on the design and world-building that makes these stories timeless...rather than just generic parade fluff.
Comic Book Heroes Fill Up Mardi Gras
Perhaps the strongest evidence in the case for Centaur is the overwhelming presence of the "Big Two" comic book publishers. DC Comics has been a staple of the parade route for years, with Batman and Superman serving as towering beacons of the geek aesthetic...showcasing some of the biggest names in comic books on the parade route.
The dark alleys of Gotham and the bright skies of Metropolis provide the perfect backdrop for the Krewe's creative energy. These floats often lean into the classic comic aesthetic, celebrating the source material with a level of detail that only a true fan could appreciate...from the Bat Signal to a cape-and-cowl.
Marvel’s Cinematic Dominance on Display
The Krewe's embrace of the Marvel Universe, which has seen massive representation throughout its history, is also a crowd favorite. Including a float dedicated to Spider-Man that once swung through the parade route.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has also left its mark on more recent designs...reflecting the shift from the page to the silver screen. With plenty of MCU vibes rolling.
One of the most impressive displays of geek culture was when a Captain's float entirely devoted to Captain America. Which came with suit, shield, and all...
That was Captain Billy Watson and this awesome display.
From day one, through the modern parades, the Krewe of Centaur has had geek culture pumping through their veins. This is a trend we hope continues forever.
