City Cuts Funding for School Crossing Guards

The Shreveport City Council votes to reduce funding for school crossing guards in Caddo Parish. The city currently spends $270,000 on crossing guards while the school system chips in $11,000 dollars.

But because of the city's financial woes, the council voted 6-1 to cut $75,000 of that funding.

The Caddo School Board has issued a statement says public safety is not the responsibility of the school district and they can not afford the additional cost. School leaders say they hope to work with the council to come up with a responsible solution.

Caddo Superintendent, Dr. Lamar Goree says he was not contacted by any council members to discuss the issue and he's very disappointed about that.

Dr. Goree says the crossing guards are city employees and he has no idea what the plan will be now that funding has been drastically reduced. He says his staff will work with the Mayor and the city to determine where cuts should be made and in what neighborhoods.
