It's a sad, sad day when budget cuts threaten the parish animal shelter. It's no secret that I'm a big proponent of animal rescue and adoption and the situation in DeSoto Parish is alarming, to say the least. That's why BFF of DeSoto Animal Services is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, November 12th, 2022. BFF of DeSoto Animal Services is the 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports DeSoto Parish Animal Services.

Join BFF of DeSoto Parish Animal Services, Inc. Saturday, November 12th from 6 - 11 pm at the LSU Ag Center in Grand Cane, LA for a perfect date night out including dinner, dancing, live music, cash bar, art show, and a wine pull!

Tickets for 'Let's Pawty' are $60 and can be purchased by contacting Andi Ramaker, board member, via call or text at 817-223-8893 by November 1st. Tickets, donations, and purchases at the event are tax deductible.

Prior to publishing this article, I reached out to BFF of DeSoto Parish Animal Services, Inc. for some clarity on why this fundraiser is so important to the people and animals of DeSoto Parish and received the following:

Over the last couple of years, the DeSoto Parish Police Jury has decreased the Animal Shelter budget to address other issues. A few attempts have been made to pass a millage without success. We may have an opportunity to vote for an increase in the sales tax in April. This would provide a dedicated funding source for the Animal Shelter.

We are holding the fundraiser to continue to support the Shelter with things like adoptions, transports, and partnerships with rescues. And, the fundraiser will help to shine a light on the Shelter and the services they provide.

Should the sales tax pass, there will still be a need to help the animals.

Obviously, inflation and the pandemic haven't been conducive to anyone sitting on a pile of money and it's no different in DeSoto Parish. I have no doubt there are plenty of pressing needs in the parish, but taking care of the lost, abandoned, and neglected animals in our area is important, too. That's when we, as responsible and animal-loving citizens, have to step up and help out.
