One of the easiest gifts to buy for someone is a gift card. Especially if you have no idea what they might want or like. Gift cards are always a good easy gift for Secret Santa gifts or for your aunt Carol who is really into Amazon. However, it is also an easy scam to create if you are thinking of being naughty this Christmas.

According to KSLA, the scratch off gift cards are something to look out for when purchasing gift cards.

Some may have replacement scratch off stickers bought from online websites. A pack of 50 costs just $7. A person could pull a gift card off the rack, detach the original strip from the back, and record the card number and pin.  A replacement security sticker would make the card look pristine before the card is placed back onto the rack, but the act is illegal and punishable by law. -Andrea Finney, KSLA

If I were you, I would just stick to the tamper resistant cards. This seems to be the safest choice when purchasing gift cards. KSLA gave advice to resist getting caught in this scam. Including tips like registering the card online when you get home and if possible change the security pin and buying cards that are behind the cash register.

So when you are shopping for gift cards, be careful.
