2.5 million people up and down the East Coast were evacuated as a weakened Hurricane Irene made its way toward land Saturday.

The storm has been downgraded to a Category 1, but is still considered quite dangerous.

Evacuation orders were in effect Friday from South Carolina to as far north as Massachusetts.

The storm has shut down New York's subway system for the first time ever, and at least 6,100 flights have been canceled through Monday.
