Citing a coin shortage at the Federal Reserve, grocery giant Kroger has announced that they will no longer be handing change back in the form of coins.  According to the report from News Channel 5, Kroger will encourage customers that use cash to donate the remainder of their change that would usually come back as quarters, dimes, nickles, and pennies to a charity (the Zero Hunger, Zero Waste Foundation) or have the amount added to their loyalty cards to use as credit towards a future purchase.

The move doesn't seem to be permanent, however.  According to the statement from Kroger officials:

"at Kroger, we are implementing several creative solutions to minimize the impact to our customers...We know this is an inconvenience for our customers and we appreciate their patience. The Treasury Department expects the shortage to diminish as more regions of the country reopen."

For now, only customers that choose to check using cash at a cashier location will be expected to go coin-less.  Strangely, the reports states that coin change will still be available at most self-checkout locations.
