Louisiana Might Actually Welcome a Canadian Invasion
Louisiana is about to roll out the red carpet for a much-needed northern invasion. The Bayou State's top tourism official, Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, is developing a bold plan to attract Canadian tourists to Louisiana, and the local economy could use every last one of them. After a rocky few years for Louisiana's tourism industry, it may be time to showcase our Cajun culture.
The Connection Between Louisiana and Canada
It might seem odd for Louisiana to aim for the far north, but at one point, Louisiana's biggest source of international tourism came from our chilly neighbors in Canada. Both Canada, specifically Quebec, and Louisiana are steeped in French history, so it's not much of a surprise that many Canadians have an interest in visiting the boot-shaped state.

For most of 2025, the number of Canadians making the trip to Louisiana has dropped drastically, for mostly economic and political reasons. To mend fences across the border, Lt. Gov. Nungesser is planning a trip to Canada to develop ways to advertise tourism to Louisiana and rebuild the connection between the Maple Leaf and the Pelican.
Canada's Economic Impact on Louisiana
Louisiana's economy has always benefited from tourism, with Casinos, swamp tours, and historical landmarks littering the state; it only makes sense. New Orleans, by and large, Louisiana's largest cultural hub and biggest tourist attraction, has suffered the loss of Canadian vacation days.
If Lt. Gov. Nungesser's plan goes on to cause an incoming invasion of Canadian tourists, the state may actually welcome these strangers with open arms.
