Louisiana takes pride in being the sportsman's paradise, and we might have a new obsession in Shreveport-Bossier. Although catfish noodling was made legal in Louisiana in August of 2022, it has taken some time for several fishermen to take the bait and try this new method of fishing.

State Representative Jack McFarland teamed up with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and created House Bill 419. As of August 2022, the law covers multiple ways we can take fish out of the water and how catfish can be harvested. Louisiana became the 16th state where noodling is legal. The law says, "Catfish may be taken by means of snagging devices and hand-grabbing." So this means noodling is fair game.

How Do You Noodle for Catfish?

No, "noodling" doesn't involve using pasta as bait! Instead, your hand acts as the lure. The process involves locating a catfish's nesting spot, then bravely inserting your arm into the hole. Since catfish are highly territorial, they instinctively attack your hand. From there, the angler uses their hand much like a hook to pull the fish out. So, yes, it means plunging your entire arm into murky water, fully aware an "angry swamp monster" is waiting for you.

One Bossier City man has transformed his passion into a unique learning adventure for anglers nationwide. Vinny Wozniak launched Geaux Noodling, a guide service dedicated to sharing the art of noodling (hand fishing for catfish). Since its inception, Geaux Noodling has attracted enthusiasts from all over America, with people flying into Louisiana specifically to learn this brave and exciting method of fishing.
