Louisiana Residents Pays 18% More on Power
While Louisiana is not one of the massive oil and energy producers in America, it would be unfair to say that Louisiana doesn't benefit from off-shore drilling in the gulf or our neighbors in Texas. Even though the 'boot state' benefits from our local oil supplies, a new study reveals that we still pay a lot for our electricity.
The Average American Power Bill Is $137/Month
Across all 50 states (plus Washington D.C.) the average monthly electricity bill is $137 a month, or equal to $1,644 a year. Some states like Utah have an average bill around $85 while other states like Hawaii have bills as high as $213 for power.
Louisiana households pay an average of $159 per month for electricity, 18% higher than the national average. While it might seem obvious that states like Texas and Louisiana who benefit from the oil and power business would also benefit the wallets of people in the state, but instead Texas pays $162 a month, among the more expensive power bills in mainland America.
Well one reason given by Home Energy Club is that the summer months in southern states like Texas and Louisiana require lots of power to keep homes cool.
Louisiana Has the Least Affordable Electricity
Though Louisiana pays less for power than other states we have the least affordable electricity bills in the country. The affordability is determined by how much of the average income is required to pay the monthly average power bill.
In Louisiana it costs 3.45% of the average person's yearly income to power their home. In contrast with Louisiana, Utah was the most affordable state when it came time to pay the power company, with only 1.09% of the average Utah income going to power.
