Before the pandemic Louisiana was on track to be at the forefront of film and television production in the United States. We quickly took over many areas of movie-making because of our mild weather, tax credits and abundant technology in the state. We're now known as "Hollywood of the South", and this has become a huge economic benefit to Louisiana. During the pandemic things slowed down a bit, but not enough for us not to get noticed earlier this week when the 93rd annual Academy Awards nominations were announced.

Two movies that were filmed here and four Louisiana artists have been nominated for the prestigious awards that will be presented on April 25th on ABC. Because of the pandemic, no in-person attendance will be allowed, which is a shame since this show is usually a highlight of Hollywood glitz and glamour.

According to the Louisiana Economic Development Office, via WVUE in New Orleans, "One Night in Miami" which was filmed in LaPlace, New Orleans and Thibodaux, was nominated for three Academy Award. Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Leslie Odom Jr., Best Adapted Screenplay for Kemp Powers, and Best Original Song, which is Leslie Odom’s "Speak Now".

And Tom Hanks' "Greyhound", which is a World War II drama filmed in Baton Rouge on the USS Kidd, was nominated for Best Sound.

Other Louisiana artists that were nominated are:

  • Jon Batiste and Trent Reznor, Best Original Score for "Soul". The film is also nominated in the Sound and Animated Feature Film categories.
  • Terence Blanchard, Best Original Score for "Da 5 Bloods"
  • Garrett Bradley, Best Documentary Feature for Amazon Studios "Time"
  • Dan Janvey of the New Orleans-based company Court 13 Arts, Best Picture for "Nomadland". The film is also nominated for Best Director, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. The film stars Academy Award winner Frances McDormand

Congrats to our fellow Louisianians! Check out trailers for the two of the films below.
