Minecraft, an open-space computer game in which players can build and create anything their heart can desire, has amassed a gigantic following among youngsters who use their imaginations to give birth to expansive worlds. Universally beloved among the world’s middle-schoolers, the game has spawned every merchandising tie-in under the sun, from pixelated foam swords to T-shirts with snappy slogans to lunch boxes. And now, the youth phenomenon will permeate the mainstream even further through a feature film adaptation. The project was announced in 2014, they landed a director in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney in 2015, and this year, they’ve made moves to lock down their first star.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. executives have entered into negotiations with Steve Carell to headline the tentpole-in-the-making, though representatives from the studio refrained from confirming. And with no semblance of a plot description at hand, it’s impossible to speculate on what sort of role he might play. Even on a visual level, how Carell would fit into the film has yet to be seen — the blocky design of Minecraft is central to its identity as a game, but there are no plans to mount the production as an animated feature.

Regardless of his head’s distracting curved shape, this is a pretty unsurprising move for Carell. He’s a father to a current 15-year-old and 12-year old, and looking through his recent filmography, you can see Carell trying to give them something to watch. The Despicable Me franchise, a voice-acting gig in Turbo, his adaptation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day — they’re all for the children, and this looks like no exception. Just imagine strutting into your seventh-grade classroom and bragging to all your friends that your dad is starring in the Minecraft movie...
