Louisiana’s Ricky Saints Wins First WWE Championship
Louisiana native Ricky Saints just won his first taste of WWE championship belt gold with the NXT North American Championship, setting himself up for a promising career with America's biggest pro-wrestling company by breaking a record with his win.
NOLA Born and Bayou State Original Wins Big At NXT
At this week's episode of WWE's NXT, Ricky Saints faced Shawn Spears in a one-on-one match for the NXT North American Championship. Saints landed a sit-out dominator (he calls it the Rochambeau) on Shawn Spears, for a 3-count pin to win the championship.
This is Saints' first championship title since dropping the DEFY World Championship, just days after he ended KENTA's record-breaking championship reign.
Very fitting for the NXT North American Championship to be in the hands of Ricky Staints, as both were born in New Orleans. It was at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans in 2018 that Adam Cole won a 6-man ladder match to become the very first NXT North American Champion in Saints' hometown.
Ricky Saints Hopeful to Earn Spot at WrestleMania 42 in NOLA
Saints is currently on the NXT roster, which is known as WWE's developmental brand. NXT offers a place for wrestlers to dig their heels in and hone their skills before they, hopefully, make it to the WWE main roster.
Despite being on the developmental roster Ricky Saints set his sights on making it to the WrestleMania 42 match card before the show was even announced to be taking place in his hometown.
How long will Ricky Saints' championship reign last, and will he make it to the 'grandest stage of them all'?
