Shreveport Church Puts Out Booklet Condemning Kids to Hell
If You Grew Up in a Very Religious Home, You Probably Remember Chick Tracts.
Chick Tracts are basically comics for Jesus, or so I thought. As a kid, I remember that some of the pictures in the comics would scare me. Why was there a devil taking this innocent little girl? Would that happen to me if I didn't pay attention at church? I do remember being forced to watch "Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames" as a child. Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames is a very popular touring evangelistic drama that "depicts the reality of heaven and hell, and the importance of believing in Jesus Christ to go to heaven." Although it is an evangelical interpretation of the Gospel, four-year-old me couldn't help but think I am going to burn in hell.
A huge part of my childhood was being scared of going to hell. I have always hoped and prayed that we can find a better way to teach children about Christ's love for us and not "scare people into heaven".
The Chick Tract that is making its rounds all over Shreveport-Bossier is called "Happy Halloween" and it follows three friends who enter a haunted house amusement on Halloween. These kids fall through a trap door into a room of hellish monsters the experience is so scary that the kids run out right into traffic and Timmy is killed instantly. After that, Timmy's friends are told that he is burning in hell because although he was a good kid that wasn't good enough to get into heaven.
Shreveport Baptist Temple located at 288 Flournoy Lucas Road Shreveport LA 71106 decided to put the "Happy Halloween" Chick Tract out in the community, and several parents are upset. One parent decided to email the church after she found her 7-year-old reading the "book" to her 4-year-old little brother. "I found out about the booklet after I heard my daughter tell my son that they were going to go to hell for eternity".
This concerned mother realized that her kids were given a Chick Tract instead of candy at a local Trunk-or-Treat event.
This parent who asked to remain anonymous emailed Shreveport Baptist Temple telling them that the "booklet" was highly inappropriate for small children to take home. Is it a sin to celebrate Halloween?
