A Mascot with a Mission

Loyola College Prep held an epic homecoming rally on Friday, September 19th, where Flyer the Beagle made his official debut. The best part? He's going to be a huge part of the day-to-day operations at the school. Flyer is more than just a symbol of school spirit; he's in training to become a certified therapy pet who will bring comfort, joy, and a lot of fun to the entire Loyola community.

Principal Dr. Laurie Salvail explained that Flyer fits perfectly with the school’s unique identity. “Loyola has always been unique in having Snoopy, the Red Baron, as our mascot, and now we’re the only high school in the country to have a live Beagle mascot to match,” she said.

A Community Effort for a New Family Member

Flyer’s well-being is a community-wide effort. His handlers have been trained with the support of Louisiana Tech University, whose staff generously shared their expertise in live mascot programs.

Freshman Quinn Stanberry is one of Flyer’s trained student handlers, and he is a member of the Stanberry family, who will care for Flyer. He also has the support of a full team of student handlers who will walk with him at games, pep rallies, and other school events.

Flyer's presence not only adds excitement to school traditions but also provides the therapeutic benefits of a dog, bringing cheer to both students and staff. As Dr. Salvail said, "He's already become part of our family, and we can’t wait for the community to meet him."

Wild Animals Illegal To Keep As Pets in Louisiana

While a person might consider it novel to keep lions, tigers or bears as a pet in Louisiana, they are among the list of wild animals forbidden to be kept by private citizens as pets. These are just some those animals Louisiana law completely forbids from ownership.
