Shreveport Mudbugs Receive Proclamation from the Parish

Out of all of the historic sports teams that have called Shreveport home over the years, no team has ever (or will ever) have the same impact as our Shreveport Mudbugs.

Think about our city's unprecedented history when it comes to sports. Back in the 1970's, we had the Shreveport Steamer playing in the American Football Association. Maybe you've heard of one of their broadcasters, the one and only Larry King. Yep[, that's pretty historic.

Or how about the Shreveport Captains. You remember those days at Fairgrounds Field, I know I do. Fans would pack the venue to see future MLB talent in Shreveport for three decades. The Captains were affiliated with the MLB from 1971-2002. Absolutely, that's historic.

That's not all. Through the years, Shreveport-Bossier has been home to many memorable sports franchises such as the Swamp Dragons, the Battlewings, and the Sports.

Even with all of that history, one franchise remains and stands tall above the rest. The Shreveport Mudbugs brought hockey, of all sports, to town back in 1997, and in 2021, they're still winning championships and making Shreveport proud. The team of old will be remembered as one of the most successful minor league hockey organizations of all-time, where winning came as easy to our teams as breathing. The organization decided to step away from the sports scene in town back in 2011, after winning the Ray Miron President's Cup for a fourth time. The team should have won five of those bad boys, but that's a controversy for a different time.

When the Mudbugs left, our city was without sports for the first time in a very long time. Naturally, if any organization had the ability to not only come back, but come back strong with championships and a loyal fanbase, it was the Shreveport Mudbugs.

Sure enough, that's exactly what they did. In 2016, the Shreveport Mudbugs announced they were back in a major way and looking to take the NAHL by storm. It didn't take the organization long getting back to their winning ways, making the playoffs in their first season and winning the Robertson Cup Championship, and Organization of the Year, in just their second season. As many of you know, The Shreveport Mudbugs won their second Robertson Cup in four seasons last month.

The celebration has been non-stop for Mudbugs fans after winning the top-prize in the NAHL yet again, and this week, Caddo Parish leaders decided to get in on the celebration as well. Today, the Shreveport Mudbugs received their proclamation from the Caddo Parish Commission for not just one, but two Robertson Cup national championship wins.
