Southland Conference has joined the list of college football conferences to cancel the 2020 football season... For now.

Earlier this week, both the Pac 12 and the Big 10 announced they will nnot be participating in the 2020 college football season. The Big 10 presidents voted to push the 2020 season to 2021 in order to keep everyone involved safe. The presidents of Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Purdue all voted to push the season.

Now, just a few days later, the Southland Conference has decided to postpone all Fall sports for the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Southland Conference's commissioner spoke about the decision, highlighting potential long-term health effects as a key reason.

He says, "There’s been recent discussion and studies on myocarditis, heart inflammation, detected in student-athletes who had COVID.”

For now, the conference has plans on holding all conference games in the Spring of 2021. Also, the conference has given schools approval to play non-conference games in the Fall, but McNeese, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana, and Northwestern State have all opted-out until 2021.

The decision means that both Tulane and UL have lost their season opener opponents. There is good news for Louisiana football fans, and that is that Houston Baptist still plans on visiting Louisiana Tech. That game is currently schedules about a month from now, on Septemeber 19th.
