If you're wondering why there is a correlation between hotter temperatures and a spike in property crimes, the answer is simple: Kids.  Once school lets out for the summer, officials with the SPD expect a rise in vehicle burglaries.  Officials say that juvenile criminals will be staying out later during the summer, and will most likely use that time to steal from easy targets like your car.

To combat this inevitable rise in car theft, and theft from cars, authorities are urging you to triple-check that you haven't left any valuables in the vehicles (firearms are a prime target) and that your doors are locked at night.  Police also advise you to never leave your keys in the car, even during the day as this might prove to be too much temptation for young thieves roaming the area.

Basically, the advice is this: Make stealing from you as difficult as possible.  These crooks are looking for an easy score, which is why simply locking your doors is the best deterrent.  More than likely, the thieves will simply abandon the burglary to find an easier target.
