Keanu Reeves is back for another intense chapter in the John Wick franchise — and as evidenced by the first teaser, you have exactly one year until he arrives. Get ready.
Yeah, we’re thinking he’s got a Starz subscription. The universe of John Wick is about to blow up, as Starz confirms that a Continental TV series based on the infamous assassins’ hotel is officially in the works with Keanu Reeves producing.
John Wick is back again… again. Keanu Reeves’ immortal hitman will come out of retirement once more in John Wick: Chapter Three, which Lionsgate has officially announced will hit theaters May 17, 2019.
Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder are kind of the alt version of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet: you know they’re not together, but they’ve appeared as co-stars often enough that you kinda ship them, just a little bit. If that’s you, good news: Reeves and Ryder, last seen together in Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, are reuniting once again for romantic comedy Destination Wedding.
If someone asked you to recall Keanu Reeves’ earliest acting gig, you might think of Parenthood or Babes in Toyland. As it turns out, the intensely likable star of John Wick: Chapter 2 started his career a bit earlier than that, and like us non-famous folks, Reeves’ first job wasn’t exactly pleasant; in fact, it was kiiiiiind of awkward, but that just makes this little-seen footage of Reeves as a teenage reporter on a Canadian kids’ show all the more rewarding.
There’s nothing quite as much fun as a perfectly conceived and executed supercut. Whether it’s a compilation of movie scenes where Nic Cage loses his mind or a movie dialogue version of one of Lionel Richie’s classic songs, a good supercut is the perfect piece of digital ephemera for movie lovers everywhere. And while most supercuts are fan-made labors of love, at least one studio has noticed the attention given to them and planned its marketing accordingly. So it was that the John Wick ‘Symphony of Violence’ supercut was given unto us, and it was very, very good.
Sometimes, the best films are the ones with the simplest concepts. For instance, “just 100 minutes of Keanu Reeves beating the pus out of Russian gangsters” turned out to be a premise worth its weight in gold, as if cinema has never really needed more than Keanu in an all-black suit delivering beatdown after beatdown. In 2014, John Wick effortlessly reminded audiences of how competent, how brutal, how downright fun action cinema could and should be, and the studios responded in kind with news of a sequel. But all dogs would do well to watch their little doggy backs in the months to come, because Wick’s got more than a movie on the horizon.
If you haven’t been paying attention to Twitter for the last hour (or if you’re an enlightened soul who manages to function without an account), then you may have missed the first official photo from John Wick: Chapter Two. Yeah, Keanu Reeves is thinking he’s back, and this time…he’s bringing his tailor. In all seriousness, we could use more action movies about sharp-dressed assassins with great hair who love dogs.
Bill & Ted 3 has been in the works for years, and while that prolonged development time isn’t any worse than, say, waiting for a new Pixar sequel, keep in mind that it’s been 25 years since Bill S. Preston, Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan last graced the big screen. Over the last few years, both Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter have assured fans that they’re very much committed to making the sequel once they’ve perfected the script and budget (and cleared their respective schedules). The latest update comes from Winter, who says the duo could reunite later this year or early next year to film Bill & Ted 3 — which definitely sounds like progress, but don’t start holding your breath just yet.
