Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" steamrolled the competition at the box office this weekend, taking in an impressive $85 million in three days.

It now holds the record for biggest December opening ever, beating out 2007's "I Am Legend", starring Will Smith.

The animated kids' movie "Rise of the Guardians" came in a distant second place with $7.4 million, and "Lincoln" rounded out the top three with $7.2 million.
