I still remember the first time I heard about 'angel gowns.' I cried my eyes out. I truly believe that just about the worse thing that could ever happen to a parent is losing a child. This program works to help lessen the load on grieving parents, as much as that is possible.

The Wings of Grace Gala and Butterfly Release on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Shreveport Aquarium is being held to benefit Southern Grace Angelic Gowns. This group takes donated wedding dresses and turns them into burial garments for stillborn babies or infants that pass shortly after birth.

Here's more on the event thanks to Jason Coffel at the Shreveport Aquarium:

Shreveport Aquarium will host the Wings of Grace Gala and Butterfly Release on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. to benefit Southern Grace Angelic Gowns, an organization that transforms donated wedding dresses into burial garments for babies that are stillborn or die shortly after birth. The burial garments, known as angelic gowns are given to grieving parents at no charge through hospitals, funeral homes and individual family requests in hopes it will help them get through the most difficult time of their lives.
All proceeds from the evening will benefit the nonprofit, Southern Grace Angelic Gowns. The organization has adopted over 45 hospitals in five southern states, as well as two military bases. And with their group of volunteer seamstresses, they are able to donate a constant supply of gowns. According to the Centers for Disease Control, over a million pregnancies end in miscarriages or stillbirths each year and the organization has hopes to expand every year into more and more hospitals.
The Gala will also feature a butterfly release to give families a chance to get closure and say goodbye to their angel baby. When their child's name is read, they will release a live butterfly in that angel's memory during a brief moment of silence. Butterflies can be released for any lost loved one, not just babies. The release will be available on live feed giving out of towners the ability to release a butterfly in a loved one’s name. Butterflies are $10 each and must be purchased in advance.
Tickets are $60 and include dinner, aquarium tour and complimentary glass of champagne. There will also be dancing, door prizes, a live auction and a silent auction with many great items including sports memorabilia, trips, designer purses, jewelry and more. The Savage Trio will be providing all musical entertainment and Thomas Spayth Portrait Design will capture the moments in pictures and also provide a photo booth.
