Wynonna Judd Responds to Sister Ashley Judd’s Women’s March Speech
On Jan. 21, millions of Americans, and supporters around the world, rallied and marched in protest of newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump. Among those at the event in Washington, DC, was actress Ashley Judd, and following her speech denouncing President Trump, her sister, Wynonna Judd, used Twitter to share her thoughts about the current political climate.
During the DC Women's March, Ashley Judd read a four-minute poem, “Nasty Woman,” written by 19-year-old Franklin, Tenn., resident Nina Donovan. Judd's time at the mic became one of the most talked-about moments of the Saturday marches, and also drew plenty of criticism from those watching the moment on TV.
On Twitter, on both Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 22), Wynonna Judd stressed to her followers that she "[doesn't] do politics on here."
"It's my understanding that I'm an artist and singing is my gift," Judd explains, later adding, "I have supported my country for 52 years, I've sung for 5 presidents, & I will support my country until I take my last breath."
The #WomensMarch hashtag trended on social media on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 22) as events took place in Washington, DC, and a number of other cities in the U.S.; still more protested in Mexico, England, Spain and more. Reuters estimates that nearly 5 million people took part overall, including 750,000 in Los Angeles, 125,000-200,000 in Chicago and somewhere between 400,000 and 600,000 in New York City.
