This past May, black-ish creator Kenya Barris announced that ABC greenlit his new comedy series called College-ish starrng Yara Shahidi. Now, the writing officially has started and the show has been renamed Grown-ish.

Set to air on Freeform, the show will focus on Zoey Johnson (Shahidi), as she heads off to college and quickly discovers that not everything goes her way once she leaves the nest.

Deon Cole of black-ish will co-star with Shahidi, but the rest of the core cast will be new characters,  both in the administration and student body who all reflect different aspects of college life. Zoey's parents, played by Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, will also make appearances once in a while.

In the BlackTree TV youtube video featured above, Barris and Shahidi are interviewed at Essence Fest saying how excited they are to be casting and starting the writers room.

Barris also commented, “I never thought they’d let me put black-ish on the air, let alone give me a spinoff. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to continue working with Yara and the rest of this talented young cast. To any aspiring writers struggling to make it out there, I highly advise adding an ‘–ish’ to any working title you might have. It seems to be the move.”

Grown-ish, set to debut 13-episodes, has not yet set a premiere date.
