When Garrix was eight years old, he saw DJ Tiesto play at the Olympic Games in Athens. This sparked his desire to be come a DJ himself. He began composing music and is currently enrolled at the Herman Brood Academy, a production school in Utrecht.

In 2012, Garrix co-released a song with Julian Jordan called "BFAM." That same year he remixed Christina Aguilera's song "Your Body" which she released on the deluxe version of her album Lotus. His song "Just Some Loops" appeared on Loop Masters Essential, Volume 2, a compilation album with TV Noise.

Garrix co-released "Torrent" with Sidney Samson in 2013 on his idol, Tiesto's Musical Freedom label. He then signed with Spinnin Records, a Dutch label.  It wasn't until June 16, 2013 that Garrix received worldwide attention with his song "Animals." The song made him the youngest person ever to reach the No. 1 spot on the Beatport charts. Hardwell, another DJ, caught wind of the song and put it on his album Hardwell presents 'Revealed Volume 4.'

In September of that year, Garrix put out a remix of Sander Van Doorn, Demitri Vegas and Like Mike's song "Project T." The song went to No. 1 on Beatport almost immediately. That fall, Garrix was honored by being named to DJ mag's top 100 DJs in 2013. He entered the rankings at No. 40 as a rookie.

"Wizard" was released in December 2013 with Jay Hardway. The song is doing well in Belgium and the Netherlands, with major potential in the United States. Garrix then collaborated with Firebeatz on the song "Helicopter" which spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Beatport charts.

This year has been big for Garrix. He performed at Ultra Music Festival in March, taking the opportunity to debut new tracks, many of which include collaborations with other DJs like Dillon Francis, Afrojack and Steve Aoki. Garrix has also released Proxy, which is available for as a free download on SoundCloud. The free download is his way of saying thank you for a great year in 2013. Garrix is currently playing The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. In a recent interview, Garrix talked about how excited he is to show the world what he can do. He definitely doesn't want to be the kind of DJ people think they have figured out.
