In a bombshell interview with Mark Saltzman, the former Sesame Street writer revealed that the iconic cohabiting duo Bert & Ernie were gay.  Saltzman is a 15 year veteran of The Muppets, where he wrote scripts and songs for our favorite puppets and earned an astonishing seven Emmy awards.  His work included writing for Bert and Ernie, and according to Queerty.com - the couple were a reflection of Saltzman's relationship with acclaimed editor Arnold Glassman - although he claims not to have written them as gay on purpose. When asked point-blank if the couple were gay - he said "when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were."

For the record, the Jim Henson Company has gone on record also.  The owners of the Muppets and Sesame Street released a statement back in 2015, stating

Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics, they remain puppets and do not have a sexual orientation.”

Saltzman wrote scripts for Bert and Ernie in the early to mid eighties.
