With all the talk about Shreveport's haunted buildings, I have to share my own experience finally. I believe one of the most haunted buildings in town was once a thriving bank, and now, it's home to many busy Shreveporters. I’m talking about The Standard, a gorgeous place that’s beautiful both day and night, but a little less so after dark.

My Haunted Home at The Standard

I called The Standard "home" from September 2023 through September 2024. The easy access to anywhere downtown is something I miss a lot, but there's one thing I can do much better now that I don't live there: sleep in peace. Besides the lights randomly flickering, I had two experiences that, to this day, I have no explanation for.

The Intruder That Was Never There

The first time I was convinced the building was haunted was one night when I was getting ready for bed. I heard someone enter my apartment and walk through the living room. My dog heard it too, staring intently at the guest room door.

Petrified, I grabbed my gun and a phone, walked over to face the intruder, but all I saw was a very active ceiling fan. I stood there, a gun in one hand, a phone in the other, and my dog just judging me for not being able to calm down. I tried to convince myself that it was all in my head and that nothing creepy was happening in my apartment.

The Ballerina Music Box

A week after my "fake intruder" incident, something happened that will forever haunt me. It was close to midnight when my boyfriend and I heard the faint, eerie sound of a music box. We looked at each other, confused, as both of our phones were right next to us. The sound, like a creepy child's lullaby, seemed to be coming from a box in the living room.

We opened the box, where an old phone that hadn’t been on or used in months was just sitting there, with a creepy alarm going off. This experience still sends a chill down my spine.

Needless to say, my boyfriend would ask me to stay at his place moving forward. The apartment just had a different feeling after that.

A Building Famous for Its Hauntings

Did you know a scary movie was filmed in this very building? I refused to watch "Room 203" while I lived there, but now that I'm out, I may muster up the strength to watch it. The film's trailer sets the scene: two best friends move into a mysterious apartment only to find it's haunted by evil spirits and a terrifying history of possessions and rituals. I have a feeling that’s a little too real for me.

A Sneak Peek Inside Spirit Halloween's Shreve City Pop-Up

The first days of the fall season are upon us in the Shreveport-Bossier area, signaled by the return of the pop-up Halloween superstore, Spirit Halloween. Known for turning empty stores into haunted havens, the chain is back with its costumes, decorations, animatronics, and even fursuits? This year, three locations have emerged from the underworld for the season. You can find a store in Bossier City at 3161 East Texas St. in Bossier City in the former Big Lots, and two in Shreveport: one at 1293 Shreveport Barksdale Highway, funny enough, it was also a Big Lots, and another at 7547 on Youree Drive.
