Texans Should Know The Difference: Heat Exhaustion Vs. Heat Stoke
East Texas received a good bit of rain this spring, but now it's plain hot outside -- regardless of what storms we have gotten since the start of summer.
In the absence of rain summer-like temperatures are here along with the humidity. Most of the time the heat is tolerable, but when you factor in the humidity, that's when it becomes uncomfortable in East Texas. I say after living here for a while you get used to it, but it's still unbearable and we'll complain about it!
As clean-up efforts continue across the region, those working outdoors will need to pay attention to their body so that they do not overheat and suffer a heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
Knowing the difference between Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
While being active outdoors we have to pay attention to our bodies so that we don't cook them from the inside out. With the combination of heat and humidity, it is challenging for our bodies to properly regulate our core body temperature. When we lose too much water and salt through perspiration, we can experience a heat-related illness. (University of Houston)
During times of extreme heat, it is important for us to stay hydrated and pay attention to what our bodies are telling us.
When the temperatures and humidity get high to where it begins to affect people the National Weather Service will issue any or all of the following:
Heat can be dangerous and if you're not careful you could potentially die from overheating your body.
If you have any outdoor activities planned make sure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated so that your body can sweat. Find shade and try to stay out of direct sunlight. Whether those outdoor activities are for leisure, sports, work, or working in the yard you could overheat your body quickly.
