Shreveport Snuck Into the Season Finale of DC Comics ‘The Penguin’
The media viewing eyes of Shreveport, Bossier, and all of Louisiana were spread around quite a bit this weekend. There was the Alabama versus LSU game on Saturday, the New Orleans Saints took on the Atlanta Falcons, and then there was Yellowstone. A lot of elements demanding attention from viewers.
One of the big offerings to viewers was the season finale of DC Comics "The Penguin" on HBO Max.
The show stars Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, and Rhenzy Feliz. It's based on the classic Batman villain, The Penguin...which Farrell plays. Its an extension of the Matt Reeves Batman franchise that he launched in 2022 with the film The Batman. Farrell portrayed his Penguin character in that movie, before bringing it to the small screen.
This series lasted 8 episodes, which concluded this past weekend. While we won't get into spoilers on the content of the show, we will have to review part of the season finale to make the Shreveport connection.
During one of the final scenes, a character named Sophia Gigante (Falcone) is preparing to set fire to personal belongings. As she gets ready, the soundtrack crescendos with a song from the group Sleigh Bells titled "Where Did You Sleep Last Night".
This song is a cover (of a cover) song, which is based on the Kurt Cobain version of the song. There's a lot of versions of this song, so we have to make sure we're keeping track of the right one here. But as it was pointed out when the Sleigh Bells version was released, this is specifically the Cobain version.
Kurt Cobain covered it multiple times, including arranging and performing it in 1990 with Mark Lanegan. Then again, and most famously, with his band Nirvana during MTV's Unplugged in 1993. During that performance, Cobain gave credit to his version of the cover to Shreveport musician Lead Belly...
Which makes the version played during the season finale of The Penguin a cover of Lead Belly's song "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?". Giving the show a little bit of Shreveport in its closing moments.
