Personalized license plates can be really fun. You can share your personality, represent your family, pay respects to someone, advertise a business, or send a message to other drivers. There are a lot of ways you can utilize a personalized plate. But not every plate that gets requested gets approved.

It probably doesn't feel good to come up with what you want, find the perfect way to fit it onto a plate with limited characters and space, then go through the paperwork to submit it, only to have it denied by the state. But that happened in Texas last year, more than 5,000 times.

According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, they denied over 5,000 plate requests in 2022. But why does the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles turn down plates? KVUE reports that there are multiple reasons they will deny a plate:

"...plate submissions need to be approved by the department and can be declined if the plate pattern is indecent, vulgar or derogatory. Plates referring to race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation are also not allowed, whether they are derogatory or not.

Plate submissions will also be declined if they contain a reference to illegal activities, gangs drugs or represent law enforcement or other government entities."

Some of these make total sense, but obviously based on some of what was denied, there's also some subjective decisions made in this process. Just taking a look at the examples we have here, you can see some concepts that might not fit the above criteria that were still denied by Texas...
