Sad news for horror movie fans...

Wes Craven, director of such horror classics as Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, died Sunday at his Los Angeles home after a battle with brain cancer.

Craven's directing career began in 1972 with The Last House on the Left, which he also directed and edited. He went on to direct 1977's The Hills Have Eyes and 1982's Swamp Thing.

Craven played a major role in launching the careers of several actors, including Johnny Depp, whom he cast in the original Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984.

Most recently, Craven was serving as executive producer of MTV's new Scream television series, and had just signed a development deal with Universal Cable Productions.

He is survived by his wife Iya Labunka, sister Carol, son Jonathan, daughter Jessica, grandchildren Miles, Max and Mary-Jean, and stepdaughter Nina.
